I have osteoporosis -- indirectly related to C. diff. but also genetic -- and fractured a vertebra in my spine last year. I am now on Forteo (a shot -- I can only take two years because it caused bone cancer in lab rats -- very expensive co-pay). My osteo. doc. also prescribed Vit. D3 (1000 IU). I originally bought it at the hospital where he practices but now order it from Walgreen's - much cheaper. Vit. D3 is essential for calcium to be effective. I didn't know it had other benefits. The manufacturer is Freeda Vitamins( Long Island, NY).

As usual, this is not medical advice. Do check with your doc. before taking any new medication or supplement.

Several friends told me they saw a program on TV about the alcohol gels. The program said to buy gels that contain at least 60% alcohol.

Of course, we C. differs know alcohol gels don't protect against bacteria but do help against viruses. (Soap & water are best for bacteria, but we can't carry a basin with soap and water with us.) Gotta do what we can do!

Someone mentioned wearing face masks to ER's. Great idea. Make sure they say "N29." Years ago, a resp. therapist told me they are the most effective. You can buy them at any hardware store. 3M makes one form.

Nothing is 100% guaranteed, however.

Also in Media Reports.

hi bobbie, thanks for the info, but im sort of confused in that in another post on this site somewhere there was a post saying to get "n95" by 3m as opposed to "n29" by 3m? Maybe I read it too fast at thought I read "n95" but im pretty sure I read that here somewhere.

thanks

We use a handwipe in the field as soon as we deglove called PAWS...it has a very wide effective use. We also use a product called HQUAT to disinfect our gear. But most important wash your hands for at least 15 seconds.

pleasehelp,
I posted the info. about N95 respirators in Media Reports. I double checked, and that is what the newsletter said. I have the N29 facial masks by 3M.

I know little about masks/respirators. Maybe someone can google the info. and post it here. Or perhaps someone with a medical background (like Hua Kul) can tell us.

The only medical experience I have is from "the School of Hard Knocks."

LOL! I'm a computer operator, definitely do not have a medical background. Everything I post is from research over the years, most of it initiated by a personal medical problem of mine or a loved one. The web is a wonderful tool. That being said, much of what I learn has come from a network of personal contacts, legitimate, trusted web sites, and peer reviewed studies, sources which I have accumulated over the last ten years. If possible I like to contact doctors personally if I have questions about their statements. Usually this is only possible if they have a web site or blog. Probably about 95% of what I find in searches is discarded, either because it is just a repeat of common wisdom which isn't always correct, or is not supported by peer reviewed studies, or is simply hype to sell a product. Generally information I find has to be correlated from several sources and supported by peer reviewed studies. I love doing this.

God Bless,

Regarding the masks, here's an article from the local paper about use of the N95 in Ohio.

http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2009/11/ohio_reverses_course_on_masks.html

Quote:
Ohio health officials have given health-care workers clearance to use surgical masks to prevent the spread of H1N1 flu, instead of the previously-required fitted respirator masks.

The state health department reversed an earlier decision backing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on so-called N95 respirator masks. The CDC recommends the disposable N95 masks be used when treating patients with flu or flu symptoms.

Ohio hospitals had pressed the state to relax the rules. The policy has been controversial because the respirator masks are in short supply, and research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association last month found N95's aren't any better at preventing flu than surgical masks....(more)

More here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgical_mask

Any simple mask protects others from your germs not you from theirs, but is a good reminder not to touch your face with your own contaminated hands though.
And as we all know.
Contaminated hand to mouth is the surest way of catching most infections.
