Since I started Vanco on Monday my stools are still loose and darker. I am only going 2-3 times day though and no mucous any more. Is this normal with the Vanco? I am on taper and started (4) 125 mg on Monday. Prior to that, Xifaxin but relapsed when I went to one a day. On Xifaxin, 3 a day, stools were formed, it did take about 3 days for that to happen. Is vanco comparable in this regard? Thanks in advance.

The first time I took vanco, my stools got looser, but I started my c diff with pseud. colitis, with blood and mucus, but formed stools. With the relapses it took about 3 or 4 days for the mucus and blood to go away and stools to become better, but they were never normal on vanco. This last time when I did the Xifaxan chaser, they got better on the Xifaxan, were still loose on the vanco.

Vikingjeff- With my first round of vanco it took a full month before I had solid stools. It just takes time! After each relapse though it seems it took less time than the first time to get control of things. I guess it is because I got the vanco in me quicker. Good luck- hope things get better soon!

I was on a vanco taper for almost 3 months and i had 5-7 stools a day (small but..) and colon pain the whole time and mucus from time to time right up until the end..... and then some. I lived with the fear that the vanco wans't doing it's job It wasn't until a good 30 days after and some experimentation with vitimins that i started to feel some healing, questioning myself and convinced that i probably still had it. And it took a good deal longer then that to really feel good (i still have my days and I am 5 months out) but for now I am there. I only hope i can stay here!!! good luck!! You will pull through, it's a real drag but this will pass.

monacat, that is the way I feel. I get up in the morning and will have 2 BM's without fail, a little cramping, not bad and stools are loose but formed, no more mucous at all. I am to drop down to 3 pills a day starting Tuesday and I feel the 125mg may not be enough. It is just a hunch based on what I see and my past dealings with C diff. If it is not, I will just go back to 4, call my GI and go from there. Over the last year if I have learned nothing else it is what to do when certain symptoms arise and to be prepared. I have a whole refill of Xifaxin at the ready to tide me over if anything does happen down the line. The first time around with this beast I did not know what I had and fought it for a week at home until I cried Uncle. By that time, it had gone in to colitis as I was having 30-50 BM's a day, almost all mucous. I pray I will conquer this monster! I played basketball this morning at the Y so it is NOT winning yet!

With time and in the event you do not get over it you will definitely learn all the tricks to controlling it and it becomes more of an inconvenience to you than a scary disease. I have dealt with this thing for 8 years and I can tell you I know each symptom I have and what to do to control it! For the most part I live a normal life now with only occasional problems. Lets hope it continues that way!

I Never had normal stools on vanco and now that I'm off I still don't. Occasionally it will be darker in color, but usually Cdiff like. Even though I'm 30 days off the meds, I'm still convinced I have the infection even though the tests have showed a negative.
Monacat, what supplements helped you the most?

Wild pacific salmon oil (enteric coated- by"Natural Factors") was and still is amazing to me. To this day if my colon is sore i up my salmon oil intake in a day and this usually helps out alot. It you google it you will see that it had been used sucsessfully in studies in the treatment of mild to moderate cases of inflamation with chrones and colitis and it REALLY worked for me. I also use every second day 2 teaspoons of unpasturised (important) apple cider vinager and I really feel as though this has helped aid in my digestion alot too. I am not without problems but these two matural remedies I should be a spokesperson for that is how convinced I am that they work when taken regularly. The salmon oil worked almost overnight for me (after having a constant sore colon through my battle with c-diff and post vanco.). I take 2 pills a day. And bless my hot water bottle... my best friend! ha! good luck!!
ps, sorry! sorry! sorry! to those who hear this salmon oil tirade every two weeks from me but people ask and so i must divulge!!
